Sat, January 31, 2009 - 9:13 AMActually, "the going to hell for not believing in Jesus" part was rescinded at the Second Vatican Council.
The issue is that he reinstated the schismatic Society of Saint Pius X movement which had been previously excommunicated. The relevance to Jews is that SSPX rejected Vatican II and one of their Bishops is a public Holocaust denier.
Theologically speaking, the Pope said Bishop Williams is a liar on the Holocaust denial issue, but that being a liar doesn't make him a heretic.
I'm not saying that I like it, just saying that's how they see things on their end.
