A chance encounter in Israel between vets and a giraffe has led to a rabbinical ruling that the African animal is kosher.

Giraffe meat and milk has been ruled acceptable for observant Jews according to a report in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, vets were asked to treat an adult, female giraffe at Israel's largest zoo, the Safari Park in Ramat Gan.

The team, led by Professor Zohar Amar, took a routine sample of milk and found that it clotted in the way required by Jewish law for kosher certification.

They submitted more milk for verification by the rabbinical authorities and the paper reported that a ruling was made that giraffe meat and milk are acceptable for observant Jews.

The giraffe belongs to the family of grazing animals that have cloven hooves and chew the cud, thereby making them consistent with kosher rules, but the milk test was the final confirmation.

"Indeed, the giraffe is kosher for eating," Rabbi Shlomo Mahfoud, who accompanied the researchers in their work, said.

"The giraffe has all the signs of a ritually pure animal, and the milk that forms curds strengthened that."

But Dr Yigal Horowitz, the zoo's chief vet, said this did not mean there would suddenly be a surge in demand of giraffe food products in Israel.

"This does not mean that tomorrow we are going to drink giraffe milk or eat soup made from giraffe necks," he said.

"After all, this is an animal in danger of extinction.

You'd really be sticking your neck out to eat an endangered species. (Sorry, it was an itch I just had to scratch.)

If giraffe milk were to become popular that might actually aid in the propagation of the species.

        Wikipedia says:

"Camel milk is a staple food of desert nomad tribes and is richer in fat..."

If they're nomads, then I guess they would walk a mile for a camel. If they're Jewish nomads, then they'd avoid it (also Wikipedia). It's in the same class as horse meat and horse milk. I don't keep kosher but if I did, I would have no regrets on that account.

camels meet one criterion, but not the other -- they chew cud but don't have cloven hooves.

          Not kosher.

Just as pigs have cloven hooves but do not chew cud.

So I take it that the milk is only kosher if the animal's meat is as well?

@ Ian -- right ... No consuming nothing from a non-kosher animal ... On the other hand, I understand that using the skin is ok -- so no problem playing football with an actual pig skin ....

Well, one isn't eating the pigskin.

That said, in answer to the the question as to why there are so many pigs living in Judea (at least according the the Gospels), there are two theories:

1.) The Gospels were written by goyim, so what do they know?

2.) Pigs served a societal purpose: they were part of the sewage system, in that they ate the trash on the street: unclean animals. A professor I had many years back noted that he had seen just such a system in one city in India: There would be one breed of pigs that was raised for food and another that cleaned the streets which was considered unfit for human consumption.
