Someone left a bagel with the 'orphan' food, i.e. free for the taking.
Where did anyone get the idea that if you bake something similar to Wonder Bread in the shape of a donut and give it a shiny crust it's OK to call it a bagel? It's just wrong! If I had tried to dunk it in coffee, I had the impression it would dissolve. After toasting, it wouldn't even take a schmiel of cream cheese without crumbling. If we had a Ministry of Food Truth in this country, the makers of that insult would have had to label it something like "Pillow Soft Enriched White Bread Donuts".
In a time of natural disasters, war and economic decline, I don't need THIS TOO!

Re: Does food ever make you angry?
Thu, June 19, 2008 - 10:37 PMit's just infuriating...the things they call bagels these days.
Bagel Boy is the only place...and I still miss Bagel Boy on Piedmont.. I just loved that little place.
OK so now it's Berkeley Bagels on Gilman.. ooh-la-la.. thee bagels are still waaaay good.
(I feel somehow better after that) -

Re: Does food ever make you angry?
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 9:33 AMIt is possible to get proper bagels in Portland. Noah's has a few places around town. There is a deli up on NW 23rd called--I can't remember what it's called but I know how to find it.
The latest is Kettleman's. The proprietor is Chinese but he named it Kettleman's because they're genuine boiled bagels made in a kettle; the shop also has some rabbinical endorsements.
When it comes to some of the drek that try to pass for bagels, it's 'buyer beware'.
